What is Silver Swans®?

Silver Swans is an initiative of the Royal Academy of Dance. Following research into dance practice for older learners, the gentle Silver Swans® classes are specially designed for the over 55s to help improve mobility, posture, co-ordination and energy.

At the Janet Lomas School of Dancing, we have taught Silver Swans since its launch in 2017. Before lockdown, we taught over 100 Silver Swans each week at our school in Bury, Lancashire.

In 2020, we launched our online international Silver Swans® classes, which have increased in popularity and are now a permanent feature of our timetable. Each week, we have participants joining us from across the UK and abroad in our online Silver Swans classes.

FAQs

I have a few health problems – does this mean I can't join?
The Royal Academy of Dance have carefully designed the Silver Swans® classes in order to make it accessible for all. It must be emphasised that Silver Swans classes are gentle ballet classes and so are run at a slow and easy pace. Our event for the Age of Creativity Festival is suitable for absolute beginners.. You can take the class according to how you feel on the day and only do what you know it is safe for you to do – and should you feel the need for a short break or to sit down and watch, we won't mind!

However, it is always recommended that you speak with your GP or healthcare professional before starting any exercise programme. Only do what you know is safe for you to do and do not push beyond your capabilities. If you are unsure, please speak with your doctor or medical professional first.

What should I wear for the event?
Please wear something comfortable that you can easily move around in e.g. leggings and a top. For shoes, please wear whatever is best suited to your flooring, ensuring that it isn't slippy. Specific ballet shoes are not necessary for this event.

Can I join in if I'm in another country?

Our online classes are open to anyone from anywhere, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. Please be aware of time zone differences – the class will be held at 11.00am BST and taught in English.
Are classes only for the over 55s?
Although Silver Swans classes have been specifically designed for the over-55s, if you feel that this is the right class for you then please get in touch, whatever your age. There is no upper age limit and classes are open to both men and women.

Do you teach regular Silver Swans classes?

We teach both online and in-person Silver Swans classes. Our in-person classes are held in Bury, Lancashire however, these are currently paused due to Covid restrictions. When we return back to in-person classes, we will still run some Silver Swans® classes online as these are now a permanent feature of our timetable, with participants joining us from across the UK and abroad.
Are you offering official Silver Swans® classes?
Our Silver Swans classes are run and taught by a Silver Swans® Licensee. Silver Swans Licensees have undergone specialist training through the Royal Academy of Dance in order to receive their license. As a mark of an official Silver Swans® Licensee, always look out for the logo.
