If you are an adult ballet dancer who feels they could benefit from additional support to benefit strength, muscle memory and body awareness, then Progressing Ballet Technique is the class for you. Taught live on Zoom, our live weekly adult Progressing Ballet Technique® classes are the perfect class to complement your adult ballet training.

Progressing Ballet Technique is a body-conditioning and strengthening program designed specifically for dancers by Marie Walton Mahon OAM – a former professional ballet dancer, choreographer, and educator with over five decades dedicated to dance education. This program is also popular with our gymnasts and skaters as it can transform how you move, feel, and perform.

PBT works from the inside out: through a graded series of exercises using equipment such as exercise balls and resistance bands, dancers develop precise alignment, coordination, and control, supported by music and guided by an understanding of both technical and artistic development.

Informed by anatomy, motor learning, and movement science, PBT is trusted by teachers, professional dancers, and sports physiotherapists worldwide as effective for injury prevention and rehabilitation.
You must be currently taking ballet classes (whether in person or online) to join our online Progressing Ballet Technique® class. This class is not suitable for complete ballet beginners or those not currently in ballet training.
“PBT proves invaluable for dancers, athletes and physiotherapists, enabling them to maximise their performance and excel in their respective fields. I hold PBT in the highest regard to strengthen, motivate, and support students.”
Leanne Benjamin AM OBE
Artistic Director, Queensland Ballet Former Principal · The Royal Ballet, London

Why learn with us?

The Janet Lomas School of Dancing is an established classical ballet school of 48 years. Our ballet school now operates purely online with live classes on Zoom and we do not run a subscription service. Instead, we get to know and support all of our dancers – we are a traditional dance school... but online!

All our teachers are fully qualified ballet teachers (Licentiate level). This means that our teachers have reached a high vocational level in ballet themselves, but have also extensively studied pedagogy and andragogy (the teaching of adult learners) with world-renowned international teaching associations of the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Fully qualified teachers have to maintain a high standard and quality of teaching, follow safe dance practice and complete annual CPD requirements to maintain and update their knowledge. This means that classes are detailed, carefully planned, and you can be sure that you are receiving the highest quality tuition.

Our online PBT classes are taught by a Level 3 PBT qualified tutor. This is the highest level of tutor in Progressing Ballet Technique®, two levels above the base PBT qualified teacher status.

FAQs

What will I need for online adult ballet classes?
  • A desktop computer, laptop, phone or tablet that has an internet connection and connected camera.
  • Fit ball (size according to height – information provided upon your enrolment)
  • Small ball
  • Theraband
  • A ballet barre or sturdy chair
  • Water

Before joining any session, please check that you have lots of space and that it is clear of any obstacles.

Classes are hosted using Zoom – upon enrolling for our online classes, we email over instructions to help you get set up, equipment required and can talk you through if you have any difficulties.

What should I wear for classes?
Participants can wear anything they can easily move around in (no denim) for classes. You can wear activewear or dancewear. Whatever you choose to wear, it must be tight fitting so that the teacher can observe your posture, technique and give feedback.

Hair must be securely tied back and no jewellery.
I am a beginner – can I join your PBT classes?
Our live Zoom PBT classes are not suitable for complete ballet beginners. However, don't worry if you've never danced before as we run complete beginner and beginner ballet classes live on Zoom. Upon completion of our complete beginner adult ballet course on Zoom, you would be eligible to join our PBT classes.

Can I join in if I'm in another country?

Our international classes are open to anyone from anywhere, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. Classes are taught in English, however we are experienced with teaching dancers where English is not their first language.

Are your online classes hybrid classes (i.e. a face-to-face class that is being live streamed)?
All our classes are taught purely as an online class. This means that all the participants in the online class have the full attention of the teacher. Our adult ballet students are not 'just a number' in an unlimited-sized online class where the teacher doesn't even know the students names. Nor are our online classes taken as a hybrid class, with students streaming along, forgotten about, in the background of a face-to-face class.

We work hard to build a community atmosphere throughout all of our classes – we get to know each of our online dancers (and often their pets and family, too!) and welcome everyone into our global community. Plus, we also host online social events for our adults and Silver Swans!

Can I take a trial class first?
Your first session of trying something new can feel quite overwhelming in any situation – not just for dance classes! And there are also all the smaller decisions and details like checking your tech set up is all working, where you place your PBT equipment in your room, whether you prefer taking class from your tablet or laptop, whether you want to try linking your device up to your TV for the optimum learning experience, where you place your camera, learning new steps, getting to know your teacher, their teaching style, the pace of the class. These are all things that can feel overwhelming if decisions have to be reached in just a single trial class. But within a just few lessons, you'll know all of these! This is why we offer two payment options – one of which is a shorter 6 week payment block. A six week payment block gives you the chance to settle into the classes and fully experience our online school.

Our adult classes don't run on a subscription basis – the fees you pay reserve your space for those number of weeks. So as soon as you've finished the six week block, it's up to you whether you want to enrol for the next block of classes.

We offer private classes if you'd like to meet your teacher before signing up for group classes – please get in touch to book a welcome private class (private class rate fees apply).

Can I join in the class with my camera switched off?
It is essential that participants have their camera on at all times during the class. This is important for safety so that the teacher can check that the steps are being performed safely and correctly. It also makes a much more friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all participants if cameras are switched on.

What ages are in the adult PBT class and how many are in a class?

We place a strict limit on our online class sizes to ensure that the teacher can see and interact with all participants in the group. Our adult classes are for ages 18+.

What happens if I miss a class?
If you miss a class, you will receive a recording of the class for you to access at your convenience.
