Classical Ballet
Non-syllabus balletNon-syllabus ballet classes secure excellent classical ballet technique, artistry and musicality while providing students with a well-rounded ballet education.
Non-syllabus ballet classes are attended by both the more serious dance student and those who wish to attend once a week as a hobby. Over the years, we have also worked closely with competitive elite gymnasts and skaters to enhance their training with ballet classes. The benefits of non-syllabus ballet is that the classes do not work to the restriction of a syllabus. Non-syllabus ballet classes are structured lessons that help to develop responsiveness to ballet exercises and steps. They also improve knowledge of ballet vocabulary in a challenging and focussed class. Classical ballet classes help to improve technique, stamina, strength, control, and poise – alongside being a great form of exercise. Ballet is widely considered to be the core technique required for all dance styles. Our students regularly participate in classical ballet workshops, masterclasses and performances. |
Graded and Vocational ballet examinationsOur optional Graded and Vocational ballet examination classes follow the Imperial Classical Ballet syllabus of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). The ISTD have a wide range of Graded examinations available, all of which are accredited by Ofqual. Graded examinations lead directly into the Vocational Graded examinations in later years.
The first Imperial Classical Ballet syllabus of the ISTD was written in 1913, based on the teaching of the French School from the Paris Opéra. From these roots, the syllabus has evolved to promote the English Classical style, and addresses the changing needs of ballet dancers today. These classes are for the more serious and dedicated student, and regular attendance is of the upmost importance. Graded/Vocational syllabus classes are a second compulsory ballet class to be attended each week if students wish to take ballet examinations — both the Graded/Vocational and Level non-syllabus classes must be attended weekly. Examination grades available for this age - ISTD - Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6 ISTD Vocational Graded - Intermediate, Advanced 1, Advanced 2 |

“I started as a pupil at Janet Lomas’s School of Dancing from the age of 4 and continued my dance lessons there all the way up to 18, just before I left for university. I had lessons for both ballet and tap dancing and achieved Distinctions in all my examinations right up to vocational level. Janet and her daughter Johanna are exceptional teachers, I thoroughly enjoyed every lesson I attended and some of my fondest memories were made at this dance school. I would highly recommend this school to anyone!”

Pre-Pointe & Pointe Class
Our Pointe classes are non-syllabus classes designed to gradually build up a student's strength and ability to dance 'en pointe'. It takes many years of good technical training, and a lot of strength to dance en pointe. Pointe work is a required element of Vocational Graded Ballet examinations.
Pre-Pointe is a compulsory preparation for every student before their transition to dancing in pointe shoes. This is a specific class for students who have been assessed by the teacher as suitable for pointe work. Please see our FAQs for more details regarding starting pointe work (Q: Will my daughter dance in pointe shoes?) |
''I loved every minute being taught by Ms Lomas and Miss Johanna. Their guidance and support made me ready to successfully audition for the performances with professional ballet companies and for my next steps to fulfil my dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer by gaining a place at a vocational dance school''. |

My 14 year old daughter has been dancing since she was 5 years old. She has been a pupil with Janet Lomas School of Dancing for the last 4 years having been a member of a different dance school in the local area. Over these 4 years the confidence, discipline and poise Lily displays has grown immensely due to being a pupil with Miss Johanna.
It is lovely to see and the performance skills she has developed has helped her with her additional musical theatre performances. My daughter enjoys her classes immensely and looks forward to learning technique with Miss Johanna.
A lovely teacher, very understanding and very talented.
