OUR HISTORY

For 45 years, the Janet Lomas School of Dancing forged a reputation across the Greater Manchester area as a leading provider of high quality dance tuition from beginner to advanced levels. Teaching a wide range of ballet students, who attended our classes both as a hobby and with a view to a career in dance, many of our former students went on to careers as dancers across the world.

THE NEW ERA

When the world stopped for the pandemic in March 2020, we took all of our classes online. From there, our online classes grew from strength to strength. We began receiving enquiries from students wishing to receive our training from across the world.

The progress and standard achieved by our students has matched what we saw in our face-to-face classes. A testament to the quality of our online training is the success and achievements of our students in our online classes. These have included our online students being awarded places at some of the UK's top full-time ballet schools with scholarships, ballet associate programmes and intensive courses.

Alongside training dancers, we also work closely with elite competitive gymnasts, skaters and sportspeople to enhance their sports training through our Ballet for Sports programme. Our athletes compete at national and international competitions and we are proud to train multiple champions  and national team members.

ABOUT US

Our classes
We are based in England and are are a family-run dance school. All of our classes are taught by fully-qualified, experienced teachers.

Classical ballet is at the heart of all training at our school – ballet provides technical training, strength and a highly-developed body awareness. However, we also offer classes in other styles – these classes enhance and complement our ballet training, for example Limbering and Progressing Ballet Technique. Our online classes prepare students in all aspects of dance: sound technique, musicality and artistry.
As an online school, we work hard to build a community atmosphere throughout all of our classes. Dancers are not 'just a number' in an unlimited-sized online class, where it doesn't matter if progress is made or not. Nor are our online classes taken as a hybrid class, with students streaming along, forgotten about, in the background of a face-to-face class.
Each of our online classes are a purely online class. We place strict limits on class sizes. Just like a face-to-face class, we work to develop the individual skills of the dancer, providing live feedback throughout the classes. We get to know each of our online dancers, their families (and often, pets!) and welcome everyone into our global community.
Silver Swans & adults
Since September 2017, our school has offered Silver Swans® ballet classes for the over 55s. Our Silver Swans® classes in Bury were part of the pilot scheme by the Royal Academy of Dance, where only 120 teachers across the world were initially licensed – we were the first school to offer Silver Swans® classes in Lancashire and regularly taught over 100 Silver Swans® each week.

In March 2020, all our Silver Swans classes were taken online and we now teach a large online community of dancers from across the world.

Our Silver Swans® classes have been featured on BBC Two's Darcey Bussell: Dancing to Happiness, ITV Tonight How to Age Well: with Martin Kemp, Woman's Weekly, Breathe Magazine, BBC North West Tonight, BBC Radio Manchester Breakfast and Drivetime show, That's Manchester TV, The Times, RAD@Home, The Daily Express, MSN and in local newspapers.

In 2023, our school expanded to include online adult ballet classes for ages 18-55 years.

Ballet for Sports
Our school runs a Ballet for Sports programme with athletes joining our programme across the UK and internationally.

In our Ballet for Sports pathway programme, we provide weekly online ballet and conditioning training, taught live on Zoom for athletes who wish to use the benefits of ballet to enhance their sports training. These classes are widely attended by athletes of artistic sports such as artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, figure skating and artistic roller skating (Dance, Figures and Free). However, the benefits of ballet training is not limited to just these sports – we've also helped people training in sports such as football, netball and swimming.

We provide online ballet training to athletes who are Champions, Team GB, Team England, Team Scotland and GB pathway competing at National and World levels.

Our daughter Amelia-Mae has attended Janet Lomas School of Dancing for just over a year now. She had previously attended a local dance school for 3 years. We decided to change schools last summer as Amelia had made little progress, and we were unhappy with a few other aspects. 

We were apprehensive at first as Amelia had lots of friends in her class and just loved dancing. Janet Lomas had been recommended to us by a friend who had danced there when she was younger. We made a call and Amelia went along for a trial. We were instantly impressed with the set up. We were greeting in a warm and friendly manner and the over all professionalism was clear to see from the get go. I was amazed to see the standard of their dancers And more importantly how happy they all were.

Amelia made the decision to transfer dance school and has never looked back. In a matter of weeks her technique , posture and core strength had improved massively. She made more progress in a few months than she had in years previously. More importantly Amelia was happy. She  loved her new teacher Miss Johanna, made new friends and just seemed to enjoy her dancing even more (which I didn’t think was possible). She continues to progress and now attends twice a week.

Janet Lomas is a fantastic dance school with highly trained teachers . We recommend Janet Lomas to everyone who is interested in dancing!
