Swans adult ballet – more than just an online adult ballet class!

Let's dance, move, feel and enjoy!

Sometimes we lose sight of why we are taking ballet... it's to DANCE!

Our Swans adult ballet online classes are, at their heart, a classical ballet class. Each Zoom lesson starts with a traditional and technical classical ballet barre and centre, taught by our fully qualified and experienced ballet teachers. However in our unique online Swans adult ballet, we go one step beyond, connecting all of your learning into the real reason why you're probably searching for a ballet class right now – and that's to dance!

What makes our Swans adult ballet classes different from a normal adult ballet class is that each of our online Swans adult ballet classes session concludes with a focus on learning choreography – from Swan Lake to Don Quixote, La Sylphide to original pieces of choreography by the teacher. We want our adults to be able to connect all of their technical learning from their classes together into the goal of choreography and to really feel the joy of ballet!

Why learn with us?

The Janet Lomas School of Dancing is an established classical ballet school of 48 years. Our ballet school now operates purely online with live classes on Zoom and we do not run a subscription service. Instead, we get to know and support all of our dancers – we are a traditional dance school... but online!

All our teachers are fully qualified ballet teachers (Licentiate level). This means that our teachers have reached a high vocational level in ballet themselves, but have also extensively studied pedagogy and andragogy (the teaching of adult learners) with world-renowned international teaching associations of the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Fully qualified teachers have to maintain a high standard and quality of teaching, follow safe dance practice and complete annual CPD requirements to maintain and update their knowledge. This means that classes are detailed, carefully planned, and you can be sure that you are receiving the highest quality tuition.

PLUS THERE IS MORE! We have a large and vibrant social aspect to our Swans adult ballet online classes as we regularly arrange exclusive social events for our online Swans and Silver Swans. Past events have included a Q&A with Joanne Clifton (Strictly Come Dancing), Q&A with Brandon Lawrence (Birmingham Royal Ballet Principal), Royal Opera House Hair and Make up, The Marius Petipa Society and in-person meet ups.  Upon joining our Swans adult ballet online classes, you will also be invited to join our private Facebook group – Feathered Friends. A friendly international group of our Swans, Silver Swans and Seated Swans, where we chat and share about all things dance and non-dance related.

We often describe our Swans online adult ballet classes as not just classes, but a community. Many of our Swans join the join our online classes early and stay online after the class to have a chat with their fellow Swan friends from across the world.

Meet our teachers
I am a beginner – can I join your classes?
As we do not recommend our weekly Zoom class for complete beginners, we regularly run a four-week online beginner adult ballet course. Upon completion of this course, you will have enough knowledge of steps and positions to join our weekly Zoom classes.

What type of adult ballet classes are these?
Our adult ballet sessions are traditional classical ballet classes. They are not barre fit exercise classes.

Can I take a trial class first?
Your first session of trying something new can feel quite overwhelming in any situation – not just for dance classes! And there are also all the smaller decisions and details like checking your tech set up is all working, where you place your ballet barre in your room, whether you prefer taking class from your tablet or laptop, whether you want to try linking your device up to your TV for the optimum learning experience, where you place your camera, learning new steps, getting to know your teacher, their teaching style, the pace of the class. These are all things that can feel overwhelming if decisions have to be reached in just a single trial class. But within a just few lessons, you'll know all of these! This is why we offer two payment options – one of which is a shorter 6 week payment block. A six week payment block gives you the chance to settle into the classes and fully experience our online school.

Our classes don't run on a subscription basis – the fees you pay reserve your space for those number of weeks. So as soon as you've finished the six week block, it's up to you whether you want to enrol for the next block of classes.

We offer private classes if you'd like to meet your teacher before signing up for group classes – please get in touch to book a welcome private class (private class rate fees apply).

Can I join in if I'm in another country?

Our international classes are open to anyone from anywhere, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. Classes are taught in English, however we are experienced with teaching dancers where English is not their first language.

Are your online classes hybrid classes (i.e. a face-to-face class that is being live streamed)?
Our online classes are taught as a purely online classes. This means that all the participants in the online class have the full attention of the teacher. Our adult ballet students are not 'just a number' in an unlimited-sized online class where the teacher doesn't even know the students names. Nor are our online classes taken as a hybrid class, with students streaming along, forgotten about, in the background of a face-to-face class.
We work hard to build a community atmosphere throughout all of our classes – we get to know each of our online dancers (and often their pets and family, too!) and welcome everyone into our global community. Plus, we also host online social events for our adults and Silver Swans!

Can I join in the class with my camera switched off?
We ask for participants to have their camera on at all times during the class. This is important for safety so that the teacher can check that the steps are being performed safely and correctly. It also makes a much more friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all participants if cameras are switched on.

What ages are in the adult ballet class and how many are in a class?

We place a strict limit on our online class sizes to ensure that the teacher can see all participants in the group. Our adult ballet classes are for ages 18-55. If you are aged 55+, then we have a range of Silver Swans® classes that you can join (beginners to advanced classes are available).

What happens if I miss a class?
If you miss a class, you will receive a recording of the class for you to access at your convenience.

Do you do pointe work?
We do not offer pointe work in our online adult ballet classes.

Do you offer exams for adults?
Yes, we can offer ballet exams for adults, however this work is not taught in our group adult ballet classes. Please see our examinations page.
