Why does ballet help sports?

Ballet provides careful and technical training, helping athletes understand the way their body moves, adding grace, poise, strength and flexibility.

Whether it’s working on fundamental movements to ensure that the leg is fully extended or advanced sequences for co-ordination and placement, ballet gives a finesse to movements that is unparalleled by any other training method.

What is Ballet for Sports?

Prices start from:
£5.50 a class

Ballet can improve many aspects of sports training as it helps with strength, posture, flexibility, leg and arm lines, footwork, control, musicality and performance.

In our Ballet for Sports pathway programme, we provide weekly online ballet and conditioning training, taught live on Zoom for athletes who wish to use the benefits of ballet to enhance their sports training. These classes are widely attended by athletes of artistic sports such as artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, figure skating and artistic roller skating (Dance, Figures and Free). However, the benefits of ballet training is not limited to just these sports – we've also helped people training in sports such as football, baseball, netball and swimming.

Did you know?

There are many examples of famous sports people who have attributed their ballet training to enhancing their sports – including Rio Ferdinand, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Jordan, Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean.
In order for ballet to benefit sports training, ballet tuition must be provided at a highly technical level by a tutor who is experienced in understanding the specific training needs of the sport – which is where our programme can help. With the Janet Lomas School of Dancing's Ballet for Sports training, you are joining a supportive community of like-minded athletes. And a benefit of it being online, is that there are no geographical barriers providing flexibility so that wherever your training or competitions may take you in the world, you can continue to access our live online classes. Plus, you will have the opportunity to access workshops, exclusively organised for athletes on our Ballet for Sports programme.

Whether it’s working on fundamental movements to ensure that the leg is fully extended or advanced sequences for co-ordination and intricate footwork, ballet gives a finesse to movements that is unparalleled by any other training method.

Would you like to know more?

We offer all new students a 30 minute 1-to-1 evaluation ballet class.

This gives us the opportunity to fully assess your child's current ballet standard and areas for development. If your child hasn't taken ballet classes before, it gives them the chance to learn their first basics positions and steps in a one-to-one environment. It also gives the parent and child the opportunity to meet the teacher and get a feel for how we can help you with our online classes –  plus, it makes the first lesson a little less daunting!

Additional benefits of joining our Ballet for Sports programme:

Exclusive workshops & events

Take part in special events and workshops, organised exclusively for athletes on our Ballet for Sports programme.
Past events have included a ballet workshop with Hannah Martin (Commonwealth Games rhythmic gymnasts and Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer), and professional performance make-up tutorial for skaters.

Focussed training

Unlike a traditional dance school where classes may work towards ballet exams or an annual school show, students in our Ballet for Sports programme are with like-minded athletes, focussing on using ballet to improve their sports training.

Tiered and age-appropriate training

In our Ballet for Sports programme, we offer multiple online classes each week so that training can be tailored specifically to suit the age and level of the athlete. This is because a one-size-fits-all open approach to ballet training for sports training is unsafe – a child beginner athlete who has only had a few skating/gymnastics classes should not be participating in the same online open ballet class as an adult elite level athlete.

Our class sizes are strictly limited so that we can monitor progress and provide live feedback to each student in the class. This ensures safe practises and enhanced development of the athlete.

Meet our Ballet for Sports coach

Picture
Miss Johanna is a fully-qualified and experienced ballet, modern and contemporary dancer and teacher with a strong background in music. It is the combination of these skills that she uses to develop artistry, musicality and performance skills in the athletes she works with. Alongside being a fully qualified ballet teacher, Johanna has taken further teacher training in Vaganova ballet method (the most beneficial ballet training method for skaters and gymnasts) and her higher-level Licentiate in Imperial Classical Ballet to ensure her athletes are receiving the highest quality ballet tuition.

To further specialise her training, Johanna also holds her British Gymnastics Sport Support Service Membership for her ballet work with gymnasts and has also trained with a Ballet for Skaters coach in the USA. This provides a unique combination of experience, quality and highly specialist training for the athletes on the Janet Lomas School of Dancing's Ballet for Sports programme.
Johanna regularly works with multiple British Champion and Team GB athletes from clubs across the UK. She also works online with international athletes based in the USA and Europe. Athletes she has worked with have won both at national and international levels.
Miss Johanna has given me so much confidence and really helped with my general strength, control and flexibility. Online lessons are very thorough and helpful with lots of individual feedback"
