ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet Senior Awards 2018

On Sunday 20th May, two of our students, aged nine and eleven, competed in the annual ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet Senior Awards.

This prestigious competition, held at Bird College in Sidcup, Kent, was hosted by our examination board, the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). It featured large classes of dancers who had qualified from all across the UK and abroad.

The competition involved students learning and performing choreography taught on the day, alongside a prepared set variation, to a panel of judges. The day began with 69 students performing in three categories, of which only a small number qualified for the finals later in the day.

In the finals, students then had to perform once again to the panel of judges. The adjudicators were William Glassman (Artistic Director of Ballet Central), Brenda Garratt-Glassman (Dance Theatre of Harlem), and Lai-Sheung Chan (Hong Kong Ballet).

In our very first year of entering the Senior Awards, we were delighted to announce that both our students received awards. They were:

- Class Commendation (one of only two awarded)

- The Joan Watts Cup for Musicality

After winning these titles, both students are now Imperial Ballet Scholars for the forthcoming year.
